Get User’s Name from Usernames

20 01 2010

So lets say you are on a linux machine with cryptic/encoded logins – like bbc78dd… but for some really important and genuine reason, you want to know who that person is… if its set in the account to start with, one way to get it is to type
getent passwd "bbc78bb"

getent – as the name suggests is get-entry. Essentially, the User’s Name is in the passwd file – that also stores hashed versions of the user’s passwords.
